Will Bitcoin continue its rally?

lundi 15 mars 2021Reading time: 2 minutes

The oldest and presumably most important cryptocurrency has experienced a real rally in the last few weeks and passed the 50,000 US dollar milestone for the first time in mid-February. For investors who want to participate in the performance of Bitcoin, but do not want to invest directly in the cyber currency, the new tracker certificates on Bitcoin could be an interesting investment opportunity.

After Bitcoin had already surpassed its all-time high from 2017 in December, the price of the oldest cryptocurrency increased even more and finally reached the threshold of 50’000 US dollars in February.

A major driver for the recent price development of Bitcoin was probably Tesla. After all, the company revealed that it had invested around 1.5 billion US dollars in the cryptocurrency. In addition, credit card provider Mastercard announced that the company plans to enable transactions with certain cryptocurrencies in the future.

The demand for Bitcoin and the need to participate in its price development has been growing steadily. For investors who want to participate in the price development of the cryptocurrency - but do not want to invest directly in Bitcoin - Vontobel's tracker certificates offer interesting investment opportunities.

New tracker certificates available

Since the beginning of February this year, Vontobel has issued several new tracker certificates on Bitcoin to enable investors to participate in the performance of the Bitcoin performance: One tracker certificate that was issued in subscription and initially one that can be traded directly in the secondary market on the Swiss stock exchange. Due to strong demand, Vontobel decided to launch a further certificate - Tracker Certificate II on Bitcoin - just a few days after the launch of the two new certificates.

Vontobel as Custodian

The exchange-listed open-end tracker certificates on Bitcoin allow investors to participate in the Bitcoin price development without having to have access to a Bitcoin platform with a "Bitcoin wallet" themselves. Unlike other issuers, Vontobel continues to act as custodian for the bitcoins underlying the new certificate and, as usual, does not include a clause in the term sheet that passes on the risk of a possible cyber attack or theft of the bitcoins to the investor. Accordingly, the risk of a loss of Bitcoins due to hacker attacks, technical problems, improper handling or due to the failure of the Bitcoin custodian does not lie with you as investor of the certificate.

Conditions of the new certificates

With the new tracker certificates on Bitcoin, investors participate 1:1 in the price performance of Bitcoin, taking into account the management fee and adjusted for the subscription ratio, and at the same time enjoy a Moody's rating of Aa3 for the issuer. Investors bear the issuer risk. A total loss of the invested capital is possible. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. In the new tracker certificates on Bitcoin a management fee of 3.75% p.a. is incurred, which is priced daily per rate. The subscription ratio of 1:100 makes the products also available for investors who want to participate in the Bitcoin performance with a low capital outlay and/or plan a new entry.
