Bitcoin Explained – Chapter 1: A quick overview

22 July 2019Reading time: 3 minutes

Just 10 years ago, an unknown person called Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin. Since then, the first digital crypto currency has been the focus of various debates. Whether as a speculative object, as a new payment method or in the context of digitization.

Bitcoin - an endless up and down?

Bitcoin has not been a new term for many investors for several years. Especially since the rapid rise at the end of the year 2017, when Bitcoin was about to break through the 20,000 USD mark, Bitcoin has been at the focus of capital market news again and again and has led experts to express all kinds of opinions and price targets.

However, investors' joy at the end of 2017 did not last long - as quickly as the Bitcoin price rose, it fell again in the course of last year. Interest in Bitcoin grew not only among investors and tech fans, but also among governments and regulators. At the beginning of 2018, the price fell sharply after a first fork led the Bitcoin Blockchain to the new currency Bitcoin Cash and thus also divided the Bitcoin Community in two different groups. In the course of the year, Bitcoin and other crypto currencies were subject to heavy regulations and legislation. So-called Initial Coin Offerings were classified as prohibited by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The South Korean Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) severely restricted the handling of crypto currencies in 2018 in the context of bans on anonymous trading accounts, reporting requirements for crypto exchanges and the ban on Bitcoin futures trading by local financial institutions.

However, since the beginning of this year, the Bitcoin price has seen itself again in a rather bullish development - on 26 June, the Bitcoin reached a 12-month high against the USD at USD 12,700. There are various theories why the BTC price has recovered so strongly, yet no expert can really prove or justify its development. But no matter whether it is a place of refuge for investors due to unsatisfying yields on traditional investments, the increased interest of institutional investors or increased crypto research projects at companies such as Microsoft, Facebook, Square or the CME - Bitcoin's share price has been in a upward movement again since the beginning of this year.
